road cycling routeOnce upon a time when I used to have an office job and was a little less active than I am now-a-days I used to make my New Year's resolution to get fit and shed those Christmas Turkey pounds. Unfortunately, I also had a handful of excuses, too busy at work, too cold to go out and train, too dark, too tired, too anything, not to see this through. In an attempt to stay motivated to shed those pounds I found myself signing a gym membership for a year, at a cost of 60 pounds a month 720 pounds for the year! This would be the answer to shifting those Christmas Turkey pounds. For the first month I was there 3 or 4 times a week, however, by mid February, my motivation to go to the gym had diminished considerably and all I used to notice was the loss of 60 pounds a month.....from my bank account. Does this sound familiar? If so, read on!

The climb to Puerta de las Palomas

The Christmas season is almost upon us and for many of us it means Christmas parties from the end of November all the way to the big day. By the time Christmas actually arrives I, for one, used to be fed up of eating roast turkey and more often than not felt completely stuffed, like the poor old bird. Then it's round all the family over the Christmas period and more eating and drinking. I recall one year, I had to endure 7 roast dinners in 7 days, going back to work was a problem as the suit always seemed to have shrunk a size or two over the Christmas festivities too.

Riding by the Guadalhorce reservoirSo from my experience, what you need to do is strike whilst the iron is hot. Acknowledge the fact that Christmas brings an unwanted gift of a few extra inches around the waist and commit yourself to do something about it. The answer to shifting those unwanted Christmas Turkey pounds is here in Andalucia. For less than a year's gym membership you can come to Spain, stay in a luxurious hotel on a full board basis and ride your bike every day for a week, feel the sun upon your face and return home feeling slimmer and fitter.
