Road cycling and the Law in Spain Print E-mail
Road Cycling

precaution cyclistasI often get asked about the Laws in Spain with respect to cycling so here is a quick overview.

Rule 1) Wear a helmet.

The only times, by Law, that you are permitted to ride without a helmet is:- a) when you are on a substantial climb, b) for reasons medical, c) in conditions of extreme heat.

This law is suitably vague as to what is a substantial climb and what temperature is extreme heat. In reality I've never seen anyone stopped by the police for not wearing a helmet, although, surprisingly enough I do see many riders riding without a helmet.

Rule 2) Drink and Ride.

The same limits of alcohol consumption for motorists apply to cyclists, which is 50mg of alcohol to 100ml of blood (0.5%)

Rule 3) Ride in a Pelaton.

It is permitted by law to ride two abreast, although you must keep as far to the right as possible, however in slow moving traffic or when visability along the road is poor it is a requirement to ride single file. Groups/Pelatons of riders must adhere to this riding more than 2 abreast is illegal.

Rule 4) Reflective Clothing

It is obligatory for cyclists to wear reflective clothing so that you can be seen by other drivers/road users from more than 150metres.

Rule 5) Long down hill descents with bends

On long descents with bends cyclists are permitted to leave the side of the road and use the whole of the lane that is available to them. Drivers and other road users are required, by Law, to follow cyclists at slow speed until it is safe to pass.

Thanks for that explanation of the law and cycling in Spain... Its amazing really as we often see kids on motorbikes with no helmets let alone kids on bicycles wearing a helmet... Is this law about helmets applicable to everyone that rides a bicycle? Even kids in villages and towns...

Can anyone tell me if you cycle on any roads in Spain with the exception of autopistas?
