This Wednesday 11th of August sees the start of an excellent exhibition of macro photography by Steve Jones of Cornwall. Steve has been travelling to Andalucia as often as possible for the last few years and his images of insect life are stunning... Get close up to spiders, scorpions, mantids, butterflies and most of all his amazing images of Iberian Dragonflies. The exhibition runs until the beginning of October so there is plenty of time to view Steve's excellent work. Further information about Steve and his photography can be found on his website at: www.cornishnature.co.uk
Steve is a proud Cornishman born in Redruth, Cornwall however he spent his early childhood living on a farm near Trysull in Staffordshire where the front garden was quite literally a lock on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal. This may perhaps explain a later passion for dragonflies!
For thirty years of his life Steve lived along the Red River Valley at Brea, near Camborne in Cornwall where the numerous abandoned tin streaming works left a wealth of flooded settling tanks, slowly being clawed back by mother nature to become a hot bed of dragonfly activity. Fascinated by the rich insect life of the area Steve bought his first SLR, a Praktica MTL5, as a visual aid to identifying the species that he encountered.
In 1983 he became one of the first members of the fledgling British Dragonfly Society and in 1987 became the county recorder for dragonflies in Cornwall.
At the end of 2000 Steve, his wife Lynn, & son Adam moved to the little village of Godolphin Cross near Helston in Cornwall which is a great base for exploring the surrounding hills & woodland managed by the National Trust.
In the Spring of 2006 Steve switched from film to a digital SLR, however it wasn’t until July 2007 when Steve visited a photographic exhibition by Cornwall Wildlife Trust Photographic Group that his photography really took off as a serious interest in its own right. Having left the exhibition truly inspired Steve joined the CWT Photographic Group becoming an active member, with his insect photography improving as a result.
His illustrations & photographs have appeared in many magazines including British Wildlife, Cornwall Life, Cornwall Today, Studies on Iberian Dragonflies, as well as a number of specialist Journals & County Dragonfly Guides.
Steve & his family are privileged to have the opportunity of regularly visiting Andalucía since 2002 and have explored the Sierra Almijara & Sierra Grazalema extensively becoming more & more absorbed by the wealth of wildlife spectacles with each passing trip to the area.
Steve currently has a year long exhibition of photographs running at the Hardrock Gallery, Geevor in West Cornwall entitled Wildlife on the Edge which depicts the bio-diversity of a post industrial landscape at an old Cornish Tin mine.
Steve has recently finished work on his first book, Insects of Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly, which will be published by Alison Hodge Publishers on the 6th July 2010. The book aims to allow anyone who enjoys exploring the countryside to identify the most commonly encountered species of insects including Butterflies & Moths, Dragonflies & Damselflies, Grasshoppers & Crickets, Beetles, Bumblebees, Wasps, Flies & Bugs.
