Christine Ellingham "Grazalema Viva"

Christine has lived in Spain, in the village of Benaoján, for eight years. She studied at Banbury School of Art and Design, (Oxfordshire, England) then Hornsey College of Art in London, where she specialized in illustration.

From the early 1960s onwards, she worked in London's Fleet Street as a freelance illustrator and designer, contributing to many national newspapers and magazines over a period of thirty years.

Nowadays, Christine is a painter and this work is as varied as her past occupation as an illustrator. She has no preferred medium. The subject matter may suggest a certain effect or she may decide, purely on a whim to go in a particular direction. She enjoys working in watercolour, pastel or acrylic, discovering each media anew when she returns to it.

'The Dream', had always been to come to southern Spain to paint. Drawn by the shimmering heat, the bold colours and sharp contrasts of light and shade, the sky at times, impossibly blue, perspective seemingly defying all laws, elements that suit her personality and her palette.

For her solo exhibition this summer, Christine has chosen, for most of the work, to explore the marvel that is Grazalema.

Grazalema is a particularly beautiful, 'Pueblo Blanco'. It is graced with an abundance of natural beauty and, it is plain to see, much hard work from the villagers to enhance this gift. It's climate is distinctive and it's setting, with a backdrop of mountains and a foreground of plains and undulations, works as an appealing composition which ever way you look at it.

Added to this, in the heart of the village, the houses are dazzlingly white and flower decked with pleasing shapes formed by angles and shadows, for a painter, it doesn't get much better!

Christine has used the medium of acrylic on canvas for these recent paintings displayed at the Information Centre and gallery in Grazalema

Exhibition of paintings- Christine Ellingham and Mayte Izquierdo

Mayte Izquierdo "Camino Hacia la Abstracción"

Mayte discovered art at an early age whilst just only 13 years and enrolled in the college of the Sagrada Family with the help of her teacher nun she created her first works entitled Buildings and landscapes of the French Pyrenees.

After leaving studies and persuing other activities It took many years until she could find the time to return and rededicate himself to painting. She Performs various specialized courses in drawing and painting and attends art workshops in the city of Granada, where Mayte now lives. She also participates in various group exhibitions and national painting contests.

Hers is a picture of stark contrasts capturing the essence of a land of whitewashed villages and whitewashed walls. Cacti and patios with potted geraniums, horse dancers and parties marked by the bullfighting tradition. She shows in her work a transfigured reality that transcends the form and soul of Andalucia.

Constantly changing, the artist explores the paths of abstraction works with a number of very suggestive and lyrical colors. There is great harmony and beauty, where her mastery of color and expression hold us in the delight of her contemplation and sublime emotions awaken us.

In this exhibition at the  Gallery Information Centre in Grazalema you can see her work that is part study and part knowledge of great masters such as Isidoro Marín, López Mezquita, José de Larrocha, Rafael Latorre, Rodríguez Acosta, Carmen Lafont, Sorolla, etc.
