Vegetarian Cuisine In Andalucia, SpainFor Vegetarians and Vegans who live, or are on holiday in Andalucia, Southern Spain, eating out can be a challenge. The majority of Spanish restaurants do not cater for vegetarians, vegans, Coeliacs or those that require a gluten free diet. Those restaurants that do provide this type of food are few and far between and very often even the traditional house salad contains tuna! Most other dishes that are available almost always contain some form of meat or fish.

Fresh Organic VegToday I met with Nikki, who is a vegetarian living with her family in Andalucia Spain, they run Casa Andaluz, a B&B and self-catering accommodation in El Gastor, in the heart of Andalucia. They provide meals for people with Special Dietary Requirements including Coeliacs, mainly for their B&B and apartment, but also for people staying in the Grazalema area. They prepare Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten free and Lactose free meals using local and organic produce when available. Nikki says this area, due to the climate has fantastic vegetables and she likes to buy locally whenever she can, to support local businesses.

Nikki Short & FamilyNikki and Joe ran The Watermill Vegetarian Restaurant at Priests Mill Caldbeck in the Lake District, UK  for 13 years, so have a lot of experience in catering and dealing with the public, but why Spain? They wanted to spend more time with their children and when running a reputed restaurant it is necessary to put in many hours. Although they loved the work they opted for a change, after searching long and hard for the right place they have now settled in the beautiful white village of El Gastor.

They now have the best of both worlds, they still prepare the vegetarian meals, tapas, hampers, look after their B&B and self catering apartment, and also get to spend time as a family.

I recently had the luxury of sampling some of the food, which by the way ,is absolutely delicious. We ate a starter of Spanish Gazpacho, which is fantastic at this time of year, with the hot weather the refreshing chilled soup is just what you need, the tomatoes are really full of flavour and remind me of summer. Next we tucked into Roasted Aubergine, Tomato and Almond Layer  with a crispy garlic topping. I am always soooo bad at saying no to puddings, but in the name of research, I tried out the Baked Chocolate Mousse, which was to die for! Yummy Yummy

Due to the success of the meal deliveries, Nikki now also delivers hampers for a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 10, there are standard and luxury hampers available.

The delivered meals and hampers are imaginative and inspiring and very reasonable, they can be delivered direct to your accommodation.
