Beware of Pine Processionary Caterpillars Print E-mail
General Nature
'Candyfloss' nest of Pine Processionary caterpillarsWhen in Spain many people may wonder about scorpions, spiders and venomous snakes and will not be aware that they are much more likely to endanger themselves and their pets by getting too close to an innocent looking line of caterpillars that can be found crossing a pavement, road or footpath during the first months of each year. The pine processionary caterpillar (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) will, during late winter/early spring, be coming out of pine trees and forming conspicuous snakelike lines.

Narcissus cantabricus (White Hooped-Petticoat)Day 1    Wednesday 9th March
Weather: Continuous rain
Eight tour members met with Paul at Malaga airport, having arrived on three separate flights from London Gatwick, Exeter and Birmingham. We made our way from the arrivals hall to the multi-storey car park, to collect our minibus. Leaving the airport, we drove west and then north towards Alhaurin de la Torre, and on towards Cartama, where we joined the A355 in the direction of Campillos, turning left for Ronda just north of Ardarles. On the outskirts of Ronda, we turned onto the El Burgo road, and were soon arriving at the ‘Finca de Guzmana’, our base for the week. We were met by Peter, our host, who soon had us settled into our rooms. After freshening up, we met in the lounge for sherry and nibbles, before heading off for dinner at the local Venta la Codorniz.

Red-billed ChoughsDay 1    Wednesday 16th March

Weather: Warm, dry and sunny

The group met with the leader Paul at Malaga airport, having arrived from the UK by plane and train. We made our way from the arrivals hall to the multi-storey car park, where our minibus was waiting. Leaving the airport, we drove west and then north towards Alhaurin de la Torre, and onto the A357 towards Campillos. As we drove, House Martins and Swallows were much in evidence. Near the village of Teba, we turned south onto the A367 towards Ronda, stopping briefly for refreshments before continuing on to the Finca la Guzmana, our base for the next seven nights. Here we were met by Peter, our host. After freshening up, we met in the lounge for sherry and nibbles, before heading off for dinner at a local Venta la Codorniz.

Sierra de Grazalema in August Print E-mail

River view at Cueva del GatoEven the lightest breeze is appreciated when you are out and about in the sierras during August. We set off with sun cream, hats and plenty of chilled water, even late into the afternoons the sun showed little desire to lower in the sky. The brilliant blue skies could be relied upon to form a beautiful backdrop to most of our images with occasional pure white clouds offering an interesting colour contrast.

Sierra de las Nieves in June Print E-mail

Strong pink of a Cistus crispus flowerWe took the drivable track that enters the Sierra de Las Nieves natural park from the western perimeter on the Ronda road. It heads about 10km in before reaching "Los Quejigales" picnic area. We were pleasantly surprised at how well the mainly gravel tracks have been maintained especially after the heavy spring rains. Cistus crispus which is a low shrub with large deep pink flowers stands out brightly against the drying grasses. We only travelled a few hundred metres before stopping to watch a Booted eagle that was carrying something in its talons. Whilst we watched a second eagle grappled, trying to steal the meal which dropped to the ground followed closely by one of the birds.

Weather in Grazalema Print E-mail
General Nature
An unusual cloud against a blue sky‘Grazalema has the highest rainfall records in Spain’, this is a phrase that is commonly found on the internet, but without further explanation could be very off putting to the holiday maker! Mountains will always alter their local climate where-ever they are in the world, and this is no exception. Note that only a few hours drive away at the eastern end of Andalucia is Europe’s only desert!

Wild Spain by Teresa FarinoTeresa Farino's latest publication comes as a great surprise.... With many beautiful photographs supplied by Carlos Sanchez this book is a must for any visitor or resident with an interest in the wildlife and geography of Spain....I must admit I was expecting a kind of pocket or travel companion guide but at 24cm X 31cm this is more of a coffee table edition. That said if you are travelling to Spain and have the space... Take it....Well done Teresa, absolutely brilliant! Click the read more for more information and a link to buy the book!

Andalusian River Walk In August Print E-mail
General Nature
Iberian water frog in algaeAt the beginning of August, when the heat was turning up towards its maximum for the year, Clive and I decided to walk for a couple of kilometres up one of the smaller river beds within the Sierra de Grazalema natural park to see if any small pools lingered through the summer and just what treasures they would hold, we were more than pleased with the results.

The perils of owning chickens Print E-mail
General Nature

Rare breed Gallinas Andaluz chicksDuring May, after much debate and delay we finally took possession of some chickens. They are “Gallinas Andaluz Sureño Negro” something that has become a rare breed of chickens from Andalusia as other types have gained in popularity. We collected a cockerel and a hen from the Zoobotanico in Jerez de la Frontera as they are breeding this pure race to promote old breeds and increase their numbers. The two of them were about 3 months old, virtually all black with a green sheen and quite handsome. We also collected 3 little chicks that were still going to need a heat lamp at night!
