It's another perfect day in paradise, which for me is the Serrania de Ronda and Grazalema Natural Park, with deep blue skies a few fluffy white clouds, the temperatures around 30 degrees and we are off to the beach. Luckily, we do not have to spend over an hour in the car getting to the Costa del Sol, oh no, 10 minutes from Montecorto and Zahara de la Sierra and about 25 minutes from Ronda and Grazalema is 'La Playita' (The little beach) at Arroyomolinos.

The 'Little Beach' is a beautiful man-made lagoon fed by a fresh-water stream set beside the turquiose blue lake near Zahara and at the foot of the 'Monte Prieto' mountain. It has well kept lawns, a scattering of trees which provide shade, picnic area and bar, but most importantly there are several Lifeguards situated around the edge of the water making sure that everyone is safe in the water. On entering the lagoon the water is shallow, refreshingly cold and is excellent for paddling with toddlers, further out the water is great for swimming in. Children are allowed to take in their inflatables and the atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful.
We usually make a day of it, taking with us a picnic, drinks, books to read and games to play, but whenever we think we have everything sorted we just look at our Spanish neighbours who seem to have brought everything but the kitchen sink with 3 or 4 generations of the family in attendance around the picnic table which has all but disappeared under a mountain of food and drink. The women are busily preparing food and making sure the children are entertained whilst the men crack open the beer, whisky, barcardi or vodkas and chat.
'La playita' is one of our favourite places to go during the summer to chill out, take a dip, generally relax and meet friends. There is nothing better than a long lazy day spent with Claire & Sophie, cooling off in the water with a picnic hamper full of goodies and not a care in the world.
'La playita' is open daily from the beginning of June to mid September and costs:
Week Days: Adults 2.50 Euros
Children & Pensioners 2.00 Euros
Weekends and Public Holidays: Adults 3.50 Euros
Children & Pensioners 2.50 Euros
Opening Times: 11am - 7.45pm
To get to there just drive along the lakeside (away from the dam) until you reach kilometre marker 5, this area is called Arroyomolinos and the 'Playita' entrance is through a gate off this road.
