Easy Walks

Picnic timeA great way to relax from all the cycling that Claire and I do is to go for a walk and when we have a few hours to spare we pack a small picnic, sandwiches, crisps, fruit and a drink, jump in the car and head off to Benaojan. The walk begins at the railway station ‘Estacion de Benaojan’ which is situated in the Guadiaro valley in the Sierra de Grazalema. You can park for free at the railway station. It’s a short and easy walk which usually takes us an hour and a half at a very leisurely pace. The walk joins the two white villages of Benaojan and Jimera. The reason it is our favourite is you can amble down to Jimera have a picnic, stop for tapas and drinks in Jimera before catching the train back to Benaojan.

Jimera de Libar signpost

With the railway station behind you and the railway line and station platforms on your left start walking, after approximately 150 metres you will get to a railway crossing on your left hand side, cross the railway line here and continue walking downhill. After a few minutes the road narrows and you cross a bridge over the river Guadiaro, on the far side of the bridge you’ll see a signpost, Ronda left and Jimera right. Turn right to Jimera this is the start of the walk and the sign allows a very generous 3hrs 10mins. You soon pass an old farm house on your left with the river and railway line below on your right. Continue along this path and after a short time you’ll cross a wooden bridge with another ruined farmhouse on your right. Shortly after this point the track forks, you need to take the left hand fork which climbs up over some rocks and away from the river. At the top of the next hill is where Claire and I usually enjoy our picnic and relax for a few minutes.

Route to Jimera

Continue on this path until you eventually come to a sign ‘Via Pecuaria’ at this point turn right and drop down to the railway line/crossing. Follow the track round to the left passing some bramble bushes on your right. The river will be on your right hand side about 10 metres away. This path comes out onto a concrete road, continue walking past the entrance to the railway station in Jimera and take the next left, after a few metres you’ll cross the railway line once again, turn left and you can see the station up on the left hand side there is a small square (Plaza San Roque) on your right and a bar called ‘Alli oli’ a great place to stop to have tapas and a drink before catching the train back to Benoajan. Bar 'Alli oli' is open from 10am everyday except Tuesdays.

Walk from Benoajan to JimeraThe trains from Jimera to Benaojan are at 13.38, 17.03 and 20.04 Monday to Friday and cost approximately 1.50 Euros per person for the trip back  to Benaojan.

We hope you enjoy this walk as much as we do.

We have walked this a few times and each time we have enjoyed the quitness, views and various forms of wildlife. The path is very easy to follow and it has several places you can stop and have a break just to take in the views or have some refreshment. It is certainly well worth doing and the train journey back just adds to the day out.
